Behind the curtain

My first real job was behind the counter selling magic tricks. Every day someone would walk in curious and walk out with a secret, and I got to watch the moment it clicked for them. I've been chasing that moment ever since.

I've been a member of the Magic Castle in Hollywood for twenty years. In that time I've studied card magic and coin magic, gimmicked decks like the Svengali, and the slow, rewarding work of doing it all with an ordinary deck. I've spent just as long with the thinkers: Juan Tamariz's The Magic Way, the writings of Arturo de Ascanio, and Paul Harris's The Art of Astonishment.

Suggested patter: "Magic is mostly storytelling. The method is how it works. The story is why anyone cares."

Why this site exists

Magic has never been easier to watch, and it has never been harder to know where to start. Searches lead to exposure videos, half-taught tricks and secrets given away for clicks. Hat & Hare is the place I wish I'd had: real tricks taught properly, the books and shops and clubs worth knowing, great performances to learn from, and a clear respect for the people who create this art.

You don't need to be a magician to enjoy it. A curious kid, a casual fan and a working pro should all find something here. If you leave with one trick you can do for a friend tonight, the site has done its job.

Meet Harry

Harry is our mascot: a slightly sly rabbit with one ear that never quite stands up straight. He's always one step ahead of the audience, and he'd never tell you how a trick is done unless you were ready to learn it.
